چکیده

The Kanizsa illusion1 (Kanizsa, 1955), one of typical subtypes of the illusory contour, is a particularly intriguing phenomenon for considering the dynamics of our visual object perception (Fig.1). It has been stimulating interests of many researchers in this field for the last several decades. As Kanizsa (1955) originally discussed, this illusion is characterized by three distinct phenomenal properties; illusory edge, apparent depth and apparent brightness. This multi-dimensional property has been undoubtedly the most fascinating feature of the Kanizsa illusion. At the same time, it has been the cause of a divergent discussion on the nature of this illusion, giving rise to various theories that try to explain its generating mechanism. Roughly, these theories fall into two categories: One category emphasizes visual organizational processing such as a figure-ground segmentation (e.g., Gregory, 1972; Bradley & Dumais, 1975; Rock & Anson, 1979); the other regards it as a special case of the simultaneous brightness contrast (e.g., Brigner & Gallagher, 1974; Frisby & Clatworthy, 1975). Then, such categorical distinctions invite the question: Is the Kanizsa illusion essentially a figural illusion or a brightness illusion?

Measurements of geometric illusions, illusory contours and stereo-depth at luminance and colour contrast

We investigated four geometric optical illusions (Zöllner, Müller-Lyer, Ponzo and Delboeuf), plus illusory contour/border induction (Kanizsa) and depth in random-dot stereograms (Julesz). Two different display conditions were compared: equiluminance with chromaticity contrast and heteroluminance without chromaticity contrast. The main results are as follows. (1) The strength of the four geometr...

A Quantitative Investigation on the Effect of Edge Enhancement for Improving Visual Acuity at Different Levels of Contrast

Background: The major limitation in human vision is refractive error. Auxiliary equipment and methods for these people are not always available. In addition, limited range of accommodation in adult people when switching from a far point to a near point is not simply possible. In this paper, we are looking for solutions to use the facilities of digital image processing and displaying to improve ...

People Re-identification in Non-overlapping Field-of-views using Cumulative Brightness Transform Function and Body Segments in Different Color Spaces

Non-overlapping field-of-view (FOV) cameras are used in surveillance system to cover a wider area. Tracking in such systems is generally performed in two distinct steps. In the first step, people are identified and tracked in the FOV of a single camera. In the second step, re-identification of the people is carried out to track them in the whole area under surveillance. Various conventional fea...

The dependence of the magnetic field strength of a sunspot umbra on its intensity and brightness temperature

A partial decrease of the convective energy by the magnetic field of a sunspot causes the temperature of the magnetized plasma to decrease and this leads to a magneto-hydrostatic equilibrium. Thus, we expect a strong relation between magnetic field strength of a sunspot and its temperature/brightness. Here, we investigate this relation in the umbra of the large sunspot in NOAA10930 using spectr...

The Ehrenstein Illusion

The original Ehrenstein illusion was first described by Walter Ehrenstein senior (Ehrenstein, 1941, 1954). It is generated by a configuration of four line segments which induce the perception of a so-called illusory figure at the centre of the configuration (Fig 1a). This illusion is part of a class of visual perceptual phenomena referred to as contrast or brightness illusions. Introduction The...
